3 Reasons to Double Down on Meaning

In a chaotic time, in a worrisome time, in a time of transition our sense of purpose matters more than ever.

  1. Meaning is a stabilizing factor: it reminds us what matters most in the moment so that we may more clearly focus our attention there.
  2. Cultivating a sense of daily meaning elevates positivity, mattering, often a sense of connection to something larger than oneself as well as a sense of elevation. We are lifted when we experience meaningful moments…even ones as small as the moment you introduce a kitten to a toddler for the first time at your animal shelter and you become the catalyst for toddler-joy.
  3. Meaning creates a sense of who one is in the present; the kind of person who cares for animals, or ignites passion for chemistry, or who brings beauty through song. It also provides a pathway to hope. When we live moments that matter we are instilled with an awareness that not only is the day worth living, but that future days may also hold a significance for us.

While happiness at this time may feel elusive or erratic, we always have the option to consider how we might find our way back to meaning. Three driving questions may help:

  1. What makes you feel most alive?
  2. What do you love to be a part of?
  3. Whom or what matters most?

Recently I’ve been reflecting on these questions and discovered a new appreciation of meaning. Much of what I love these days has to do with the gentler moments: having someone’s favorite food ready upon their return home; naming someone’s strengths in a meeting, honoring and respecting their contributions; taking a moment to thank the universe for providing such natural beauty in my surround. Meaning need not take much time or effort, but it does require us to be mindfully present so that we can see the moment in front of us as a chance to raise the ante on what lifts us. As Jung reminds us, “The least of things with a meaning is worth more in life than the greatest of things without it.”

I wish this for you. I wish for you evidence, in your own day, of the small things with consequence and worth.

And…please consider joining me in my new class:  The Heroic Journey:  Creating a Life of Valor, Purpose, Authenticity and Happiness as we take time to examine the elements that support the scaffolding of a life that matters.
